Club
History In 1978 Bill Bailey and I got our first Beardies from England. We had seen one shown in miscellaneous at a dog show, but needless to say, it was only seen in that one class and that was it. The AKC had just recognized them and very few people even knew what they were. We bred our dogs and started meeting people who bought our breeding, like Jean and Walter Kennedy, or who had imported or bought one from further up north, like Jan King.
At a show, in Deland I believe, we got together and decided to form the Dixie Bearded Collie Club. We chose that name as there was no club in the south at all. We covered territory from Florida up to Virginia and over to Texas. As the years progressed and the breed grew in popularity, more people in Florida owned BC's. Also, an egress of people from the Miami area, caused our membership to become more dispersed. We (Dixie) tried to alternate our meetings around Florida to accommodate the people in Georgia, but it was too far to travel to attend a meeting.
Somewhere along the line, Jan and Bill King moved up to Orlando and I had asked them to coordinate a meeting with the Kennedy's and others. At this point it dawned on me that there were as many members in Central Florida as there were in south Florida. At this point there were also clubs in Georgia, Washington and one starting to form in Alabama. The Dixie club progressed on it's own and became the first all herding club (licensed to hold herding trials only) in Florida. In the interim, under the helm of the Kennedy's, Kings and Marantz, the BCCCF took off on it's own.
As a result, the BCCCF is now the major club in Florida as most of the members in the Dixie Club have moved up to the Central Florida area (including me) or are no longer members through natural attrition. The membership of the BCCCF grows steadily every year. Many members are involved in rescue of Beardies and neardies and many neardie owners have since obtained Beardies and have continued to give support to the club and it's endeavors.
We now have over 155 members, are very active in rescue, have informal functions and enjoy our common goal: Bearded Collies. |
